Chapter 5
A week is left until Mackinac Island, and Giovanni and her siblings prepare to go. It is not only physical preparation with their car, clothes, and equipment but also mental preparation because this is the most dangerous mission they've been on. They won't know if they will make it back alive, and for all their friends and Mr. Chambers know, they are going on a siblings trip for the day. Giovanni hands her siblings a 5-step itinerary to make sure the plan to take down Ricardo Delgado goes as planned.
When they go outside the cave Ricardo is escaping in a plane, but things don't go as Ricardo planned because his plane crashes into rocks. Smoke and flames come from the side of a mountain, and the siblings become drenched in red liquid only to realize it's blood from the crash. Nonetheless, Ricardo is gone, and their goal is accomplished although more lives were at risked than they expected which Giovanni seems unphased about. A month after the event Marcie begins to questions Giovanni's morale and identity after leaving the henchmen to die.

The day of Mackinac Island is a seldom silence on the four-hour trip. After the drive they have to get on a ferry ride to actually reach the island, and when they get off they search a fort, a forest, and a bridge with no luck of finding Ricardo. Until an airplane fly over them, and Shonda spots Ricardo's initials on it; they follow the direction of the plane and end up at a cave with those same initials. They enter the dark, ominous cave and see Ricardo and tons of henchmen. They fend off the henchmen while trying to reach the top of the cave to capture Ricardo, but Ricardo blows up the cave. Giovanni makes an irrational and heartless decision to leave the henchmen and catch Ricardo. This shocks her siblings.
